| Corals and Sea Anemones (Anthozoa) |
Anthozoa is subdivided into three subclasses: Hexacorallia, Octocorallia and Ceriantharia. Hexacorallia includes coral reef builders, the stony corals or “hard corals” (Scleractinia), and also black corals (Antipatharia) and sea anemones (Actiniaria). Octocorallia comprises three orders: Alcyonacea (the soft corals and gorgonians), Helioporacea (blue corals), and Pennatulacea (sea pens). Anthozoa contains over 6,000 known species.
